Understanding Background Checks: What They Actually Cover

June 28, 2026 · 6 min read

"Background-checked" is one of the most-used phrases in caregiving, and one of the least-explained. It's worth knowing what's actually behind that badge before you rely on it.

A standard background check typically covers a national criminal database search and a sex offender registry check. It confirms the person hasn't been convicted of certain disqualifying offenses — it does not confirm they're a good caregiver, patient with kids, or reliable about showing up on time.

Checks also have limits by design. They only catch what's been reported and prosecuted in the jurisdictions searched — a genuinely clean record isn't the same as a guarantee, and a single flag decades old isn't automatically disqualifying either. Context matters, and it's worth understanding your platform's specific review policy rather than assuming.

That's why background checks should be one signal among several, not the whole decision. Combine it with a real conversation, a trial visit, and — where available — reviews from other families who've actually booked that caregiver.
